Abstract: Cold starts in analytic work are not isolated events but recurring moments of reorientation that occur along a spectrum: from entry in new domains to routine task-switching. Through discussions with analysts, we learned how they navigate these transitions by clarifying goals, assessing their role, and building situational awareness. These insights inform opportunities for SCADS tool development aimed at supporting analysts through such transitions. More broadly, we also also surface considerations for how SCADS participants could approach building tools that align with the demands and constraints of analytic work.
